Why we are supporting 20mph zones on our roads

Chart_Q6_140117Many Addiscombe residents have contacted us regarding the issue of traffic on our residential streets. This traffic impacts us all, not only in terms of noise and pollution, but also because it makes the roads less safe for our children, those with mobility issues and pets. We feel that a simple and cost-effective measure would be to introduce 20 mph limits on our residential roads.

In 2013 we conducted our own survey and residents in Addiscombe overwhelmingly supported 20mph zones.

They have proved popular in other cities and London boroughs and we believe they would be suitable for Addiscombe. From surveys and our own experience of talking to people we have found that Addiscombe residents are overwhelmingly in favour of 20 mph zones, which is why we made it a manifesto commitment. Lower speeds improve streets in terms of both safety and quality of life.

Evidence also suggests that 20 mph zones are so effective that motorists comply without the need for other road calming measures. Lowering residential speed limits to 20 mph has been found to increase journey times by only 40 seconds, but decrease child pedestrian accidents by up to 70%. Please take this opportunity to make our streets safer and more welcoming.
