Spring Lane Bridge to remain close until 2013

Maximum weight limit for the Spring Lane Bridge

Spring Lane Bridge is likely to remain closed until late 2012 or early 2013 Transport for London (TFL) have confirmed. The current weight restriction of 7.5t has meant that for over a year now, and possible another year, the 312 and 130 bus routes will continue to be diverted along Morland Road. This diversion has meant that the local residents around the Lower Addiscombe Shopping Parade  have to rely on the diverted 130 route to get to Norwood Junction, or to walk down to Portland Road to get a bus towards South Norwood.

Local residents in side roads near Spring Lane Bridge, especially near the Black Horse Lane bridges have reported an increase or lorries using side roads to escape the restrictions. Roads, such a Dalmally and other local roads are particularly affected.

TFL claims that their previous idea to strengthen the cast iron bridge, by installing plates made of carbon fibre materials, was not pursued as they thought it wouldn’t make much of a difference. TFL now says they have timetabled the works for later this year but no details as yet are forthcoming.
